CTC-BP (Broken Pekoe, CTC Black Tea)

BP (Broken Pekoe, CTC Black Tea)
1. Definition and Process BP is a mainstream grade of CTC black tea. Manufactured by CTC process: fresh leaves undergo withering, crushing‑tearing‑curling, fermentation and drying. Tea is processed into fine granules for fast infusion and strong liquor. Compared with BP1, BP uses slightly less tender raw material with relatively bigger particle size, and it is a highly versatile commercial CTC grade.
2. Raw Material and Characteristics
- Raw Material: Mature fresh tea leaves, lower tenderness than BP1.
- Appearance: Compact granules, dark brown‑black glossy appearance, medium particle size, few coarse stems, less golden tips than BP1.
- Internal Quality: Deep rich reddish liquor.
3. Functional/Quality Characteristics
- Aroma: Malty and caramel‑like, rich and intense.
- Taste: Robust flavour with noticeable astringency, heavy‑bodied liquor, good colour when mixed with milk. Less brisk than BP1.
- Nutrition: Rich in antioxidants such as theaflavins and thearubigins.
4. Application Scenarios
- Main raw material for commercial milk‑tea and tea blending for large‑scale industrial application.
- Widely applied for tea bags, catering and hotel beverage service.
- Not suitable for straight drinking due to strong briskness; best consumed with milk.
5. Brewing Suggestions
- Water Temperature: 90‑95°C
- Time: 1.5‑2 minutes. Avoid over‑steeping to prevent bitter taste.
- Tea Set: Teapot, mug with filter or tea sachet.
In summary, BP CTC black tea delivers fast infusion and high liquor strength with good cost‑performance. It is a widely‑used base grade for milk‑tea and tea‑bag production.
