CTC-PD (Pekoe Dust, CTC Black Tea)

PD (Pekoe Dust, CTC Black Tea)
1. Definition and Process PD belongs to the Dust category of CTC black tea. Manufactured through withering, CTC crushing‑tearing‑curling, fermentation, multi‑screening and drying. Its granules are much finer than PF1 and PF. As fine granular dust‑grade tea, it infuses extremely fast and produces heavy dark liquor, widely used for tea‑bags and chai blending.
2. Raw Material and Characteristics
- Raw Material: Mature tea leaves, lower tenderness than PF grades, fine particles from screening process.
- Appearance: Very fine dark‑brown‑black granules, scarce golden tips, relatively high content of fine stems and dust; particle size bigger than Dust(D) grade.
- Internal Quality: Heavy reddish‑brown liquor with strong colour intensity, moderate clarity.
3. Functional/Quality Characteristics
- Aroma: Dominated by caramel and roasted notes, robust aroma with limited briskness.
- Taste: Strong and pungent liquor with sharp astringency. Ultra‑fast infusion, over‑steeping easily brings bitterness. It yields deep colour with milk but lacks flavour complexity.
- Nutrition: Contains theaflavins and thearubigins, overall quality inferior to Fannings grades.
4. Application Scenarios ‑ Cost‑effective raw material for mass‑produced tea‑bags for fast colour extraction and cost control. ‑ Blending material for milk‑tea and chai spiced‑tea to enhance liquor strength and colour. ‑ Not for loose brewing; fine particles leak easily. Only for tea‑sachet packing, for milk‑based drinking only, not suitable for straight consumption.
5. Brewing Suggestions‑Water Temperature: 85‑95°C ‑ Time: 0.7‑1.2 minutes. Short infusion is mandatory to avoid bitter taste. ‑ Tea Set: Tea sachet only, not suitable for loose‑leaf brewing with ordinary filter.
In summary, PD CTC black tea delivers ultra‑fast infusion and heavy liquor colour. It fits well for low‑cost tea‑bags and milk‑tea blending, not targeting premium aroma profile.
